  1. DESIGNING YOUR EXAM

    1. Choose exam format

      1. Use Question Types - Allows for multiple question types (MC, MA, etc) to be completed 

      2. Upload or Create a Document - Ideal for essay or text-based tests, allowing you to copy & paste from a work or PDF document, or write your own questions directly

      3. “Neither, skip digital questions” -  useful when you deliver a paper-based assessment requiring students to complete a digital long-form written answer.

      1. General 

        1. Anonymize

          1. Students' identities are withheld - useful if you want to collect student responses anonymously

        2. Set a time limit

          1. Consider whether or not you will set a time limit or if you want exam.net to manage time 

            1. If YES, it will automatically stop students

            2. If YES, you should consider setting up a second exam for students with extra time

            3. If NO, you keep time and instruct students to submit when time is up

        3. Student Self-Resume

      2. Exam Type Settings

        1. Hide points from students - usually turned on so students can view how many marks a question is worth in test situations

        2. Show exam results - in test situations, recommended for you to review before releasing to students

      3. Student Information 

              Controls what information a student must provide to access an exam

        1. Recommended to tick First name, Last name, email

        2. Enter allowed emails

          1. ⚡Highly recommended - enabling this feature will require students to submit their email to begin their assessment Helpful if you plan to have students return next class

    4. Student Workspace

      1. Consider an optional writing area for additional writing

      2. Should Spelling Checking be turned on or off

    5. Cheat prevention

      1. Three levels to choose from 

        1. High-students use a high-security app that they cannot leave while writing 

          1. Students must download Exam.net’s Safe Exam Browser 

          2. Different files are specific to different computers

          3. In High Security, the SEB starts in full screen. If students leave the SEB, it locks them out. 

          4. You set the ‘consequence’ if they are locked up - usually a time penalty.

        2. Medium - students can use Chrome to write their assessment

          1. You determine whether students can leave the exam.net window, and if there are "consequences" (ie locked out of exam)

          2. Enable Screen monitoring - *beta, this is a new feature that helps you to monitor students’ activity 

        3. Disabled - students can enter the exam in any browser and will be able to use other documents and programs on the device while taking the exam.


  1. RUNNING THE EXAM

    1. Enabling the Exam

      1. From the “Monitoring/Results” tab, enable “access” to “open” or “discoverable.

        1. Open - students can sign in and begin the exam

        2. Discoverable - students join and wait in a lobby

          1. Before starting the exam, you can set individual accommodations from the “Monitoring” page

      2. Consider setting a timer for students

    2. Student instructions:

      1. In Chrome, students go to Exam.net

      2. Enter Student Exam Key

        1. Depending on security settings, it will open the SEB, or it will run the exam in Chrome

      3. In High Security mode, students will need a password from you (see Monitoring Screen) if they are locked out of the SEB. 

      4. Individual Exam Keys - Allows you to email a student-specific key to students to return to their assessment - Helpful on multiday assessments


  1. AFTER THE EXAM

    1. From the “Monitoring/Results” tab: 

      1. Check to ensure students have submitted their exam

        1. If you set a time limit, when time is up it will automatically force submission

        2. You can also “End the exam for students.”

      2. You will be able to preview students' responses

      3. You can also batch download or print for your marking pleasure!

      4. There is an ‘auto-mark’ feature for multiple-choice-style questions

    2. If you need to have students return to their exam

      1. You can provide them with a unique password to allow them to resume

      2. You can upload an email list to email the students their passwords at the same time
