PREAMBLE:
As we begin to use this tool, please share your experiences with us so we can learn as a school.
Please also be cautious about trying this for the first time in a high-stakes setting. It takes some learning!
THE WHY: Start by considering what you are doing:
What is the risk of academic dishonesty for your assessment?
What is the nature of the task?
Test like - Multiple choice? Short Answer? Both? - high stakes, controlled
Options to import existing tests/quizzes
Options to create Tests within Exam.net
Something requiring access to links, resources etc - more flexibility
Time limit?
One class? Or multiple classes?
One Class - Exam.net timed
Multiple classes:
Students can resume their work
“Student Self-Resume” feature - students sent a “resume key” by email
This needs to be tested first
Another option - consider Docs+Apps Script and Hapara Highlights for release/collect/release work
| ?Need an account? An email was sent to all Staff inviting you to create an account. If you did not receive an email or misplaced it, please email Help Desk.? |
DESIGNING YOUR EXAM:
Choose exam format
Use Question Types - Allows for multiple question types (MC, MA, etc) to be completed
Upload or Create a Document - Ideal for essay or text-based tests, allowing you to copy & paste from a work or PDF document, or write your own questions directly
“Neither, skip digital questions” - useful when you deliver a paper-based assessment requiring students to complete a digital long-form written answer.
Create your exam
Depending on your “exam format.”
Considerations for “Configurations”
General
Anonymize
Students' identities are withheld - useful if you want to collect student responses anonymously
Set a time limit
Consider whether or not you will set a time limit or if you want exam.net to manage time
If YES, it will automatically stop students
If YES, you should consider setting up a second exam for students with extra time
If NO, you keep time and instruct students to submit when time is up
Student Self-Resume
- TBA
Exam Type Settings
Hide points from students - usually turned on so students can view how many marks a question is worth in test situations
Show exam results - in test situations, recommended for you to review before releasing to students
Student Information

Recommended to tick First name, Last name, email
Enter allowed emails

Student Workspace
Consider an optional writing area for additional writing
Should Spelling Checking be turned on or off
Consider if you will have students upload additional work
Upload hand-written work

Cheat prevention
Three levels to choose from
High-students use a high-security app that they cannot leave while writing
Students must download Exam.net’s Safe Exam Browser
In High Security, the SEB starts in full screen. If students leave the SEB, it locks them out.
You set the ‘consequence’ if they are locked up - usually a time penalty.
Medium - students can use Chrome to write their assessment
You determine whether students can leave the exam.net window, and if there are "consequences" (ie locked out of exam)
Enable Screen monitoring - *beta, this is a new feature that helps you to monitor students’ activity
Disabled - students can enter the exam in any browser and will be able to use other documents and programs on the device while taking the exam.
RUNNING THE EXAM
Enabling the Exam
From the “Monitoring/Results” tab, enable “access” to “open” or “discoverable.”
Open - students can sign in and begin the exam
Discoverable - students join and wait in a lobby
Before starting the exam, you can set individual accommodations from the “Monitoring” page
Consider setting a timer for students
Student instructions:
In Chrome, students go to Exam.net.
Enter Student Exam Key
Depending on security settings, it will open the SEB, or it will run the exam in Chrome
In High Security mode, students will need a password from you (see Monitoring Screen) if they are locked out of the SEB.
Individual Exam Keys - Allows you to email a student-specific key to students to return to their assessment - Helpful on multiday assessments
AFTER THE EXAM
From the “Monitoring/Results” tab:
Check to ensure students have submitted their exam
If you set a time limit, when time is up it will automatically force submission
You can also “End the exam for students.”
You will be able to preview students' responses
You can also batch download or print for your marking pleasure!
There is an ‘auto-mark’ feature for multiple-choice-style questions
If you need to have students return to their exam
You can provide them with a unique password to allow them to resume
You can upload an email list to email the students their passwords at the same time
